We thought a Data Discovery Centre would be a perfect next step to follow #brumdatahack. Thanks to those lovely people at Traffex, we had the chance to test out our theory, live, in the middle of Europe’s largest highways and traffic exhibition at the NEC in April 2017 😉

Sponsored by Transport for West Midlands, Innovation Engine, and Yotta, the Centre enabled those working on West Midlands network resilience challenges to share their skills and expertise to help each other, and share their work live with visitors:
- SETA Mobility Project, Sheffield University
- West Midlands Fire Service
- Open Data Institute Birmingham
- West Midlands Open Data Forum – find out Midland Metro Mayor candidates views on Open Data
This was an experiment, made possible by supporters who believed in what we were trying to achieve. That’s how we progress and make change happen. It was a huge success.
We learnt:
- A physical space where people from different organisations who wouldn’t normally meet can collaborate together is key
- Time spent to identify and connect common areas of interest between different projects / people / organisations is crucial to success
- Provide the right tools and kit so people can work easily
- Maintain the overall focus on the bigger challenge that unites us all (the West Midlands Network Resilience strategy), rather than the competition or differences that separate us
- Support and help people connect, whatever their own experience and knowledge
- Lego (part of ProjectDISC) attracts crowds 😉
Next steps:
- Set up a permanent space where we can trial this over a longer time period, ideally in the Transport Systems Catapult / West Midlands Combined Authority Intelligent Mobility Incubator, iCentrum
